That night the Cao Family had a barbecue and stew, eating what they had hunted during the day.
Cao Xiong had finally appeared.
“Still, the hunting grounds in the north are more interesting. The animals in the south are soft like cotton,” he said.
All the men in the family agreed, nodding their heads.
Xia Rou was speechless. Translated by The Novelst
Her phone rang once and she lowered her head to take a glance. By the time she put down her phone, the corner of her mouth had curved upwards.
Cao Bin glanced at her a few times. He smiled and asked suddenly, “You look very happy. Who is it?”
Xia Rou tried to dodge the question. “A classmate…”
“Oh, a classmate, huh?” Cao Bin drew on his cigarette and smiled.
He reached out and grabbed her phone away. She pounced to get it back but how could she win over Cao Bin?
Cao Bin didn’t want to read the contents of their conversation. He glanced at the name and turned it around. “Wei Qi? Who is this? Tell the truth!”
“My classmate…” Xia Rou’s cheeks were red.
“Classmate, huh?” Cao Bin smiled kindly. “I’ll call them up and what this classmate named Wei has to do with our Xia Rou, harassing her for the entire day. What a restless new year.”
He pretended he was going to call.
“Don’t! Don’t!” Xia Rou tried to stop him.
He smiled and looked at her. They were all waiting for her to respond.
Xia Rou knew that she couldn’t hide it any longer. Cheeks hot and feeling pressured by the eyes on her, she admitted, “My boyfriend…”
Cao Bin burst into laughter and gave her phone back.
“How old is he? What year is he in? What does his family do?” Cao Xing exploded with questions.
Cao Xiong was also looking at Xia Rou, waiting for her answer.
Xia Rou had no other choice and could only tell the truth: “He’s been working for a year. He’s my senior…”
“What about his family?” Cao Xing pressed.
“Umm… His father is a professor and his mother is a middle school teacher,” Xia Rou responded honestly.
Then he must be someone outside of the circle. That was the immediate thought in their heads.
She continued to say, “Big brother saw him before.”
Everyone turned to Cao Yang, who raised a brow.
“It was that New Year’s day play. He was the main character of that show. The slap you said was really fake, he was the person to slap me…” Xia Rou reminded him.
Cao Yang was enlightened.
He remembered the gaggle of students chatting about the male lead and female cannon fodder looking matched to one another…
“That little kid is quite handsome,” he said. “He’s well-matched with Xiao Rou.”
Cao Xing and Cao An were both surprised that big brother let this go so easily, though she had even dared keep it a secret.
Being a girl was so great. If they had dared go against their big brother, the leather belt would already be hitting them by now.
Cao An continued to ask Xia Rou if she had any photos. Xia Rou couldn’t stand the barrage of questions, so she found a photo they’d taken together and let him take a look.
Cao An whistled. “Not bad.”
Everyone passed the photo down the line. Cao Yang stared a moment at the boy and girl in the photo and passed it to Cao Bin.
AFter dinner, Cao Bin and Cao Yang smoked together and had a chat.
“He has no background. Is he suitable?” he asked.
He had never thought that Xia Rou would find someone outside the circle. They had always thought she would look for someone suitable inside their circle to date.
“They’re just dating. It’s not like she’s getting married,” Cao Yang said, unruffled. He continued, “She’s so young and studying at university. She should date around.”
At her age, it was normal to date around and it wasn’t even considered a lot to be with three or four people. A person needed to go through those steps in their life. That was how they could mature.
Who hadn’t been like that when they were young?
Since the eldest had spoken, Cao Bin didn’t need to keep the matter in mind any longer. No matter how much he thought, he couldn’t be compared to Cao Yang.
Since Xia Rou had arrived at the Cao Family, her clothes and food had all been prepared by Cao Yang. He even went to parents’ day at school for her. Translated by The Novelst
As long as he was looking after her, there would be no need for other people to worry about Xia Rou’s matters.
He took another puff of his cigarettes and glanced at his big brother without saying anything else. He turned around to look for Cao An and the others so they could accompany Cao Xiong in playing mahjong.
Cao Yang sat on the sofa, one leg over the other, and let out a long stream of smoke, looking at the far-off board where Xia Rou was seated.
Her best times had come. Now was the time for her to bloom beautifully.
Naturally, there would be a young, handsome boy to hold her hands and kiss her lips.
