Once Cao Yang finally left, Xia Rou locked her door.
She knew that Cao Yang would hear the sound but still did it.
He was outside the door and heard a very clear click! as the door locked.
Inside this highly secured building Xia Rou felt so insecure that she needed to rely on the door lock to protect herself.
Cao Yang felt exceptionally defeated. Translated by The Novelst
He thought he had found the issue and soothed it, but he realized he had been wrong.
There was something else stopping her. Without knowing what it was, he couldn’t open her heart up to him.
She… could not accept him and didn’t want to accept him.
The entire family gathered for dinner.
There was laughter and conversation at the table and Xia Rou was unusually quiet. It was impossible to not notice.
Cao Xiong glanced at her and asked, “What’s wrong with Xiao Rou?”
Just as Xia Rou raised her head, Cao Yang answered from beside her, “She had a fever this morning. She caught a cold yesterday at school.”
Cao Xiong showed his concern: “Has she seen a doctor yet?”
“I got her some medicine. Her fever dropped once she came home,” was Cao Yang’s response.
Xia Rou didn’t want Cao Xiong to worry, so she said, “I’m fine now.” Indeed she had a bit of a cold and despite her fever being gone, her throat was a little hoarse.
“You look tired. You should rest early,” said Cao Xiong.
Xia Rou answered obediently, “Mn.”
After dinner, the men began to smoke and chit-chat.
Xia Rou stared at the patterns in the tablecloth, not listening to the conversation at all. Who knew what she was thinking.
The hand she had on her leg was suddenly held in another.
Xia Rou trembled and lifted her head.
Cao Yang had a cigarette in his left hand, expression focused on the conversation between Cao Xing and Cao An discussing a soccer match. His right hand was on Xia Rou’s left, under the covers of the table cloth.
Xia Rou struggled and was unable to pull away. She didn’t dare use too much strength, fearing it would be too obvious and that others would notice.
Cao Yang didn’t look at her but didn’t let go. He held her hand tightly.
Xia Rou looked down before speaking to Cao Xiong: “Uncle, I’m feeling a little weak. I’ll leave first to rest.”
Cao Xiong replied, “Rest well.”
Xia Rou then slowly stood up. Cao Yang had no choice but to let go.
After Xia Rou left, Cao Yang also stood up shortly after.
Cao Bin, mid-conversation with Cao Xiong, looked at him and asked, “Big brother, where are you going?”
“I need to make a call,” said Cao Yang.
Cao Bin stared until Cao Yang’s figure disappeared from their sight.
When he turned around, he noticed Cao Xiong also looking in the direction that Cao Yang had gone. The father and son shared a glance and continued to smoke.
On the other side of the table, Cao Xing and Cao An were having a lively discussion.
Xia Rou heard a knock ring out on her door. She knew it must be Cao Yang.
She held the door handle, forehead against the wood of the door. She wanted to give herself the courage to not open the door.
However, Cao Yang’s deep voice penetrated through the door. “Open the door,” he said, in his usual commanding tone.
Xia Rou’s courage immediately dispersed.
She opened the door just a crack and to reveal her slightly pale face.
Cao Yang looked at her for all of two seconds before stretching out his hand to push the door open.
Xia Rou was pushed off balance by the strength he put into it, staggering one step backward. Once she recovered her balance, she saw Cao Yang had already locked the door behind him, staring at her.
“Are you planning to ignore me forever?” he asked.
Xia Rou remained stubbornly silent.
Cao Yang let out a sigh. “Xiao Rou… Don’t be sulky. Let’s talk.”
Have a talk…
Xia Rou raised her head.
Their gazes met and Xia Rou said, “Wei Qi…”
Cao Yang wasn’t expecting her to bring Wei Qi up first thing. His brows furrowed.
“Wei Qi… He’s a great person,” Xia Rou said. “His personality is good, he’s positive and bright. His family background is simple and easy to get along with. He has dated twice before… no, or maybe he hasn’t…”
His past was simple and his personal life was clean. The people around him, colleagues or schoolmates, all had only praise to say about him, was what he said.
It suited her very much, he said. Translated by The Novelst
“It suits me very much,” Xia Rou said. “I plan to… get along slowly with him, wait after I graduate from university and find a job I like. Not to earn money and support the family, but just to have something I enjoy doing. After that, I plan to marry Wei Qi.
“Before that, I will move out and become independent. And slowly, I want to decrease my reliance on the house and especially… on you.
“Every festival, I’ll return with Wei Qi to visit you guys. We will get along like relatives. Just take me as a daughter who marries out of this family.
“This… is my life plan. Big brother…” Xia Rou looked at him. “Do you agree?”
