Cao Yang sat inside the car, watching Xia Rou carry her bag into the school entrance.
He lit up a cigarette and inhaled twice and only then did he proceed to drive off.
Xia Rou carried her bag to the dorms. When she reached the building, she saw Wei Qi sitting beneath the begonia flowers on a wooden chair, waiting for her.

The young, handsome boy sat there, his elbows on his legs, hands crossed.
Xia Rou slowed her steps and looked at him from afar.
In the past, when she was still young, she had tried to step across to a different class that was too far removed from her usual life. And she hadn’t even had a female senior to teach her anything, which led to a lot of mistakes.
In this life, she really thought this person would be the person she would live with her entire life.
She thought seriously about their relationship and was very touched. She was able to feel the sweet happiness and the wonder of a first love.
Her missing piece was filled.
But she never imagined that the person she chose because of Cao Yang would one day have Cao Yang hope… to put him to death.
Xia Rou knew that Cao Yang was only expressing his feelings. He wasn’t planning on truly doing anything to Wei Qi.
But Cao Yang had also enlightened Xia Rou: this life… was different.
She had ignored the glaring variable of her rebirth: herself.
The people and things beside her had changed drastically because of her. It was only she herself that had not changed at all.
She was as stupid as she had been.
In the last few years, she had indeed handled things better. But that was because she had experienced it all before, so knowing where she had fallen the last time, and what she had done wrong, she had simply corrected those mistakes.
It wasn’t truly because she had changed, or become better and smarter.
That was why she hadn’t improved even a little. She wasn’t able to see through the things she had encountered in the past, and now, having to face the future, she was once again lost. She didn’t know what to do.
Wei Qi raised his head and noticed her.
He stood up quickly and strode over to take her bag from her. He held her hands and said, “You’re back.”
Then he asked, “Have you eaten?”
Xia Rou nodded and asked him the same thing. “What about you?”
“I ate already,” Wei Qi answered.
He held her hand and brought her away from the busy road. He stepped on to the stone-paved walkway and they walked to a begonia flower tree.
The lights flashed dimly as the shadows of trees danced in the wind.
Wei Qi hesitated a little but in the end he still asked, “That Friday night, what happened?”
Xia Rou then went silent.
Wei Qi’s heart sank deeply.
“Was there someone harassing you?” he furrowed his brows. “Tell me who it is. I’ll go and find him!”
Xia Rou remained silent for a long time before shaking her head, “No, he didn’t harass me.”
That man had kissed her, but she didn’t think she was harassed…
Wei Qi’s heart continued to sink.
He tried to toughen up and asked, “Was he trying to pursue you?”
One could say that, Xia Rou thought in bewilderment.
Then she nodded her head and replied softly. “He wanted to be together with me…”
“Then…” Wei Qi asked in a near-silent voice. “Do you like him?”
Xia Rou was puzzled for a little bit, and in the end she said, “I don’t know…”
Wei Qi had personally seen Xia Rou reject other boys when he came to school to look for her.
She was calm and collected. She knew that she didn’t like the person, so she rejected them calmly, without pretension or hypocrisy.
But now, asked if she liked the person, she said… she didn’t know.
Not that she “didn’t like him,” but that she “didn’t know.”
At that very moment, Wei Qi already knew he had lost.
He held Xia Rou’s hand and stood under the shadow of the trees, looking at the begonia flowers. The girl in front of him was beautiful, but he felt so helpless.
But he knew clearly that the only thing that he couldn’t change with hard work was feelings.
He wasn’t afraid that there were several people also pursuing Xia Rou.
He wasn’t afraid of not having a car or property yet either, or not being able to give Xia Rou a good life.
As long as he worked hard, improved himself and strove to become a better person than her followers, it would be fine. Cars, properties – as long as she gave him some time he could definitely get them for her.
The only thing he feared was that Xia Rou… might change her feelings.
Only feelings were completely dependent on only the heart, something that couldn’t be changed through hard work.
They held hands, standing under the begonia tree, and remained quiet.
Xia Rou slowly raised her head and looked at Wei Qi’s handsome visage.
Though he couldn’t compare to Cao Yang, he was still an excellent young man. Compared to him, she was certainly ordinary.
Such an excellent person – what did he like about her?
Cao Yang – what did he like about her?
They looked at each other for some time.
“Wei Qi…” she called softly. Translated by The Novelst
She stepped forward and tiptoed to kiss him.
People who were in love were usually very sensitive to small changes of feelings. Most of all, Wei Qi was originally a smart person – he could feel that… she was looking for something in this kiss.
He responded with enthusiasm, hoping that she was looking for his passion towards her.
But unfortunately, that wasn’t it.
Xia Rou wasn’t able to find whatever she was looking for. The moment she released his lips, her eyes were filled with confusion.
After some time, Xia Rou said softly, “Sorry…”
