Cuiying Court was located inside the second entrance of Yaoling Manor. Yaoling Manor was built along the mountains, yet only Cuiying Court had a natural hot spring in its yard. The fourth miss Lin Dansha had moved quite a few expensive herbs into the yard to plant due to the nourishment the hot springs provided. Only Cuiying Court could see such an extraordinary blooming of peony flowers in the winter.
Buqi had been in the manor for seven years, and it was her first time stepping into Cuiying Court. Ever since passing the moon gate, she couldn’t help but praise the beautiful view.
A small wooden bridge came into her sight. The hot spring water flowed under the bridge, concealed in mist, hardly showing a few white lotus flowers that had already bloomed.
After transmigrating to this world, it was her first time seeing this kind of view in her thirteen years of life. She blurted out, “It’s better to become a miss, huh!”
The servant girl accompanying her to the yard, Fang Hua, had previously served the fourth miss in Cuiying Court. When she heard Buqi’s words, she covered her mouth and smiled, “From now on, you are also one of the misses of Yaoling Manor!”
The servant enunciated the word ‘miss’ heavily, brows lifting.
That was right. This little beggar who had tended the vegetable garden and was raised by a dog was somehow now a miss of the manor. If she had seen this happen to someone else, her mouth would turn also sour, and her teeth would turn acidic*. Buqi thought this in her heart and smiled quickly, “Sister Fang Hua, you’re so clever and quick-witted. If you could serve Buqi I would definitely feel more comfortable becoming a miss.”
T/L note: In Chinese, jealousy is called 吃醋, which means eat vinegar, and vinegar is very sour, that’s why Hua Buqi meant she will become jealous too if she see someone else suddenly get such great treatment.
The barefoot is not afraid to wear shoes. Most of all, at most she could wear a pair of slippers. Thinking of this, Buqi ignored Fang Hua’s angry green-tinged face and shrugged her shoulders to enter the yard.
She was instead curious to see what sort of anger would come from the fourth miss, Lin Dansha.
A shout came to her ear: “Buqi!” Translated by The Novelst
The voice was sweet and delicate, so greasy that Buqi couldn’t help but rub her hands. What if her goosebumps fell off into this yard?
She turned around to see Lin Dansha walk out with rich makeup.
She was turning into an adult next year, so she didn’t yet have her hair tied into a knot. She had a pair of thin braids on both sides of her head and a silk cloth used to tie them back that fell all the way to her waist. She was wearing a pink-lined jacket with plums embroidered on her skirt. On her waist, a jade pendant hung and made a crisp, clear sound when she walked.
Jealousy rushed up inside her. She noticed the disdainful expression on Fang Hua’s face and smiled to greet, “Buqi is here to greet the fourth miss!”
Lin Dansha pulled her up, saying, “Father has already taken you as his adopted daughter. Aren’t you going to call me sister?”
Buqi had grown up in the marketplace. When it came to understanding intentions, Lin Dansha couldn’t compare to her.
She smiled happily and answered, “Buqi is already grateful that the old master did not dislike Buqi and treats Buqi so well. How dare Buqi stand on equal footing with miss.”
Lin Dansha was very satisfied to see her attitude, and tried to compare Buqi’s looks with the woman in the drawing. They were indeed similar. Thinking back to her father’s words, her heart was finally comfortable.
She smiled and said, “Since father has already taken you as a daughter, and you address him as father, and have greeted my brothers, how can you be so distant with me? Do not mention these kinds of words again. I’ll bring you to wash and dress yourself.”
Once she finished speaking, she took off, Buqi trailing behind her into the inner yard.
Buqi looked at Lin Dansha’s figure, feeling anxious. According to her arrogant personality, she should be by all rights hostile to Buqi the moment she saw her. Buqi would then not fight back and show her weakness to give Dansha a way out. But why did this whole family seem like they’d gone silly after being struck by lightning?
Buqi enjoyed the scenery and spoke sweetly to Dansha, “Sister, you’re so beautiful. Even the yard is decorated so nicely. I heard the people that come to propose marriage were so many that they broke the front door. I wonder what kind of person would be so fortunate as to marry you!”
Lin Dansha lifted her chin slightly to respond arrogantly, “There wasn’t anyone to my taste. I have already asked father to reject them all.”
She meant that she had no engagement yet? Buqi felt uneasy.
So what was the true purpose that Old Master Lin had adopted her for? While she spaced out, she arrived at one of the pavilions. Hot air billowed out as the wooden door was pushed open. In the center of the room was a bathing pool.
Lin Dansha smiled, “Father has specifically instructed people to build this hot spring. It’s good for your skin. I’ve put some herbs in the bucket to get rid of fleas and lice, and help restore some of your vital essence. Buqi, you should soak for a while. I’ve had servants prepare new clothes for you. AFter you dress up, you should go and greet grandmother.”
Buqi was happy. She didn’t have fleas or lice on her body, and she washed herself frequently, and even washed Ah Huang. She was happy that she finally felt Lin Dansha turning normal.
On the surface Lin Dansha seemed to have accepted her as a sister, yet inside her bones she was still disgusted with her, which was why she had given the herbs. This was the Lin Dansha that she knew.
Lin Dansha left first, leaving Fang Hua behind. Translated by The Novelst
Buqi was not used to people helping her wash. When she saw Fang Hua’s face, she saw that she was unwilling, too. So she instructed Fang Hua to wait outside.
Seeing her face turn from bright to dark, Buqi sighed and mumbled, “I, your miss, have watery, tender skin. It won’t be good to have your long nails scratch it.”
Fang Hua was so angered hearing these words that she let out a cold snort and walked away. Buqi’s mood improved immediately.
She had no choice, being manipulated by the old master, but no matter what she didn’t want to look at that servant’s expression when she had to call Buqi miss.
Inside the room, Buqi was alone. She looked at the wooden bucket and took out the herbs to see. Orange peel, chamomile and motherwort: indeed this was the recipe to kill insects and maintain beauty.
She pouted her lips and said, “Disgusted by me? Who knows how many times this wooden bucket has been used?”
She disrobed in no time and went straight in the water to soak.
The water temperature was perfect, washing away the cold lingering in her body. She was so comfortable that she let out a moan.
Buqi thought that if she could bathe in this hot spring every day, being Old Master Lin’s adopted daughter wasn’t too bad. She could only hope that the matter he adopted her for wasn’t too troublesome, or else she could only bring along the alms bowl Hua Jiu had passed down to her and sneak away.
