Mo Qianren stood in front of the huge french window, illuminated softly by the dawn light shining through the window. He faced the light with a pair of gold-framed spectacles on his nose. He was shirtless, looking very pale and well-built. Further down he was wearing black trousers, one hand gripping tightly a photo of Mu Rulan.
In that moment, Lu Zimeng felt that his friend didn’t seem to be investigating a case, but rather he seemed like he was looking at a photo of his lover. He didn’t seem like the legendary criminal psychologist who took care of the psychopaths in California, but rather a perverted geek!
Mo Qianren shifted slightly to turn to look at him, his pale face tinted gold by the sunlight, looking especially handsome from that angle. It startled even Lu Zimeng, who had been friends with him for many years – he couldn’t help the pause in his footsteps as he encountered his friend.
“Don’t you know how to knock?” Mo Qianren asked coldly.
The fire in his chest was doused by cold water. Lu Zimeng rolled his eyes: “You’re really just the same as always, not romantic at all.”
“Why do I have to be romantic with you?” Mo Qianren said. When he saw Lu Zimeng was going towards his bed to touch the photos, he furrowed his brows: “Don’t touch them!”
Lu Zimeng was so shocked that his hands paused above the bed. Then he bent down to stare at the pictures: “Why? Don’t tell me there are fingerprints on them that you need?”
“Just don’t touch them.” Mo Qianren warned him as he tidied up the pictures one by one.
Lu Zimeng was standing right beside him as he cleaned them up. As he observed Mo Qianren’s actions, he saw something unbelievable: “What the hell! Why did you even have pictures of her when she was young?!”
Mo Qianren ignored him. Lu Zimeng rubbed at his nose and asked: “Wanna go out and play?”
“I’m busy.” Translated by The Novelst
“Oi!” Lu Zimeng couldn’t stand when someone turned him down.
“Did I tell you I came here to play?” Mo Qianren demanded, putting the pictures back into a transparent bag.
“But your suspicion is total nonsense, okay?” Lu Zimeng rolled his eyeballs, “Mu Rulan excels in her studies and is an ideal student. Nobody even dislikes her, how can you suspect her? Jin Moli’s case……”
“Did I ever say that she is related to Jin Moli’s case?” Mo Qianren took off his spectacles, and grabbed a white shirt from his bag to wear. His movements were smooth and elegant, the light scent of mint trailing from the corners of his shirt.
“Didn’t you come back because of Jin Moli’s case?” Lu Zimeng was surprised. He had thought that his friend’s return was for that reason.
Mo Qianren shot him a glare, as though he was asking a very stupid question. Lu Zimeng, curiosity piqued, kept asking him for the reason. It was crazy to him that the internationally known student was being suspected by a criminal psychologist! If Lu Zimeng couldn’t get a convincing answer, he would definitely be unable to sleep well that night.
Lu Zimeng followed Mo Qianren all the way to the dining table. At this time, the two elders of the Lu Family were having their morning walk, so it was only the two of them.
“Five years ago, an abduction occurred in K city.” Mo Qianren picked out the spring onions from his meal, and continued lightly: “Five of the criminals abducted four children from four different locations, aiming to blackmail the families.”
Lu Zimeng nodded his head. He still remembered the incident clearly: that year, the crime had shocked many authorities. The five kidnappers were too audacious – they’d already caused a huge commotion in kidnapping the first child, but they had continued to go on and abduct three more!
“The victims from that incident were Mu Rulan, Jin Moli, Xiao Jing, Li Yalan. Among the four of them, Xiao Jing and Li Yalan were murdered because their families did not have enough money.”
Lu Zimeng still felt lost: “I don’t think I understand your point?”
“When the five criminals were finally caught, the prime culprit was sentenced to death. But the other four were under 16 and hadn’t participated in the deaths of the two victims, so the judge gave them a lighter sentence. One was acquitted, while the other three were sentenced to imprisonment for two years.”
Finally, Mo Qianren finished picking out all the spring onions from his porridge, and started picking out the beans from the other dish.
Lu Zimeng was cramping from clenching it shut, thinking: Is this guy still a little kid? How can he be so picky but he still managed to grow so tall and get so smart!
“And in the missing case from two years ago, the victims were these three criminals from that child abduction case that were released from jail.”
Lu Zimeng was stunned: “True, it doesn’t seem like a coincidence… But if their aim was to take revenge, wouldn’t the most suspicious people in the case be the families of the two murdered children?”
“Those two families had moved away from K city five years before that, and lived far away. I paid them a visit and they hadn’t even kept up with the case – they didn’t even know who was behind the abduction.” Mo Qianren paused for a while, picking the last bean out from the pancake, then continued: “They didn’t lie.”
“But you can’t possibly be suspecting Mu Rulan just because she was abducted, right? I can’t think of how else she could be related to the case. Even then, she’s only 16 years old, which means that two years ago when it happened she would have been 14. What can a 14-year-old child do? Those three abductors were so much older than her. Do you think this is some sort of a horror movie?”
“Wrong.” Mo Qianren stared at Lu Zimeng with his delicate eyes, his gaze scary and penetrating: “Every psychopathic criminal is the main character of a horror movie themselves. Edmund Kemper went to see the psychologist, and the doctor diagnosed him with a mentally sound mind. But at that time, he had two heads in the trunk of his car – people that he had just killed.”
“D-don’t joke with me.” Lu Zimeng felt as though he could hardly swallow, but still couldn’t hold back his curiosity: “Who is Edmund Kemper?”
Mo Qianren elegantly downed a spoonful of porridge and replied: “Serial killer. The main character of the movie The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was inspired by him. Last year they held a parole session in California. He’s a genius with a score of 136 IQ. He used his smarts to deceive everybody. One of his police friends said: ‘He’s sincere to his friends, funny, and sensitive to the atmosphere. With this kind of personality, no matter what you say, I would like to continue supporting him.’” Mo Qianren’s serious gaze seemed to be able to look through many things.
Lu Zimeng, disgusted by the story, felt cramps in his stomach.

Although it was a Saturday, there were many students at the school finishing decorations for their classrooms because the school festival was on Monday. Most of them had finished their work early so they could stay home on the weekend, so there were fewer students out on Saturday. However, as the president of the student council, Mu Rulan had a lot of work left to do so she also came to school early.
In the afternoon, Mu Rusen rushed into the president’s office, slamming two hands down onto the table and gazing at her anxiously: “What do I do? Zhou Yaya’s birthday is tomorrow, but I haven’t even prepared anything!”
Mu Rulan was surprised, but smiled: “Then what do you want?”
He immediately began to act like a spoiled brat: “Sister, accompany me to shop later, please~”
“I can’t really say no to you, huh.” Mu Rulan shook her head, smiling gently.
Mu Rusen then laid across the desk while staring at Mu Rulan tidying up her things, his gaze becoming emptier as though he was being enchanted. He remained spaced out until Mu Rulan called his name and he was snapped back to his senses. He held tightly onto her hand, saying happily: “Let’s go now, it’s been a long time since I got to play with you!”
Ever since she had become the president of the student council, she had been too busy to play with him.
Mu Rulan rapped her knuckles against his head: “We’re not going there to play, we need take care of business first.”
“Huh, what business?” Mu Rusen protected his head, going to play with his sister was the real business here.
“To buy a gift, aren’t you chasing Zhou Yaya?”
“Ah that’s right!” Mu Rusen recalled his initial reason. He was so careless to forget he was chasing his girlfriend. He started to brainstorm what to get Zhou Yaya so that she would be so touched that she agreed to finally become his girlfriend.
