“Are you sure?!” Lu Zimeng said, getting closer to stare nervously at Mo Qianren’s face.
Mo Qianren only stared back coldly, like he was saying “Don’t even bother asking such an idiotic question.”
Lu Zimeng, under that continuous attack, said, “Mo Qianren, what’s with that! I’m doing this for your own good!”
For his own good? Mo Qianren didn’t understand. “How so?”
“How so?! Are you blinded by love?” Lu Zimeng asked in disappointment. “Mu Rulan is a psychopath. Don’t even try to deny it, it’s useless to deny it now. I should have believed you when you said it before! Think of your family. Think about your grandfather and your mother. Do you think they would agree to let you be together?”
“This is my business and mine alone. Why would I need their consent?” Mo Qianren answered frostily.
Lu Zimeng’s eyes went wide and grabbed his collar. “How can you say that? They’re your family!” Translated by The Novelst
“They are my family, but only your wife stays by your side for a lifetime,” Mo Qianren responded, removing his hand calmly.
Each person was an individual, and each individual deserved the right to make their own decisions into adulthood, as well as take on the consequences for those decisions.
If love was built by force, no one would want it, as such a love wasn’t pure at all.
Lu Zimeng was about to lose his top and quickly calmed himself down. He was never a match for Mo Qianren in arguments anyways. Everything would be over if he couldn’t stay cool.
“Alright, fine. We can change the subject.” Lu Zimeng gave up the idea of persuading Mo Qianren. “Aren’t you the top criminal psychologist in China? I remember you have a certificate. Doesn’t that mean you can cure her mental condition?” Lu Zimeng tried a different approach. If Mo Qianren could cure Mu Rulan’s mental illness, they could be at ease with the idea of the couple.
Cure her psychopathy? It seemed like a very difficult task; even Mo Qianren couldn’t see through her. As to seeing her current mental condition, he might even need to take a lifetime to diagnose her.
But Mo Qianren was no fool. If he told the truth, Lu Zimeng would try to hold him back, sooner or later. So he said, calmly, “Of course.”
Lu Zimeng sighed in relief. “Alright. I won’t stop you for now.”
The corner of Mo Qianren’s lips twitched with a slight touch of mockery. He sneered, “Tiny people always like to enlarge the meaning of their existence.”
Lu Zimeng was depressed. “Can you stop teasing me all the time? Your words have already pierced my heart like a thousand needles.”
If just talking to him meant getting teased now, his self-esteem would be shattered in no time by Mo Qianren at this rate.
“Don’t worry. Your thick-skinned face will definitely protect you from my ‘needles’ anyway.” Mo Qianren left the study.
Lu Zimeng trailed behind him, wanting to ask about Mu Rulan’s mental condition and the illness itself.
There were rumors of people with mental illnesses having hallucinations and reactions to those hallucinations. In those reactions they might feel threatened and so fight back, but accidentally end up killing someone instead. It was frightening. Though Mu Rulan appeared normal, she looked like one of the psychos in the movies, who were very smart and good at acting!
Before he was able to ask, he saw Mo Qianren rummage around his wardrobe for clothes. He was intrigued. “What are you looking for? Planning to go on a date?”
Mo Qianren ignored him and continued searching.
Lu Zimeng scanned between Mo Qianren and the clothes a few times and couldn’t hold it in. “The clothes in your wardrobe are the same as the ones you’re wearing. It’s either the white dress shirt and black trousers or a black suit. What exactly are you looking for?”
Mo Qianren stopped and looked coldly at Lu Zimeng. His gaze was so chilly that is made him shiver. “Wh… What is it?”
Mo Qianren closed the door to his wardrobe with a bang and annoyance flew across his face. How could he have made such a dumb mistake?
Just as Lu Zimeng said, Mo Qianren’s clothes were indeed so dull that other people might think he was a man who didn’t shower or change his clothes throughout the seasons of the year.
Mo Qianren looked at the time and calculated how long he had until he had to leave for Mu Rulan’s house, taking into account the prep and cooking time.
He felt suddenly like he wanted to watch that girl cook. So the man who always moved according to his heart prepared to leave.
He went back to his study and spoke to the fat pigeon that was still pecking at the peanuts. “Come on. It’s time to go back home.”
Lu Zimeng, still hot on Mo Qianren’s trail, was surprised once again. Surely this had to be a dream, right? He actually heard Mo Qianren talking to a pigeon. A pigeon!
The white bird tilted its head and looked at Mo Qianren, wriggling cutely. It flapped its wings with a large peanut in its mouth and flew towards Mo Qianren, wanting to rest on his shoulder. Mo Qianren dodged in disgust, saying, “Unless you shower three times a day in disinfectant water, do not come close to me.”
Lu Zimeng felt a mysterious sense of satisfaction when he heard that. He felt that his life wasn’t so tragic! But finding comfort in the plight of a pigeon… didn’t that make it even more tragic?
Mo Qianren walked down the stairs to the kitchen, looking at Mother Lu who was busy cooking. “Aunty, I’m leaving.”
“Huh? Going where? Have something to eat before you leave, the rice is almost ready!” said Mother Lu quickly.
“No need. Mu Rulan is cooking, so I’ll eat with her.” Translated by The Novelst
Mother Lu’s eyes widened. Father Lu turned his gaze over as well. This… was the change that came at the cost of the critical juncture of life and death last night?
Mother Lu said happily, “Oh, is that so! Go ahead then, remember to drive safely. Ah, what about the soup? I just stewed it!”
Mother Lu made it for Mu Rulan. It should help with clearing the lungs. She heard that she had nearly suffocated, so she must have breathed in a lot of unwanted substances.
“I’ll invite her over tonight for dinner,” Mo Qianren said, not seeming to realize he had become more aggressive.
